About Houston

Abstract

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States of America and the most populous in the state of Texas. It is situated along Southeast Texas near the Gulf of Mexico and to the east of Austin.

It was founded on August 30, 1836 by Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen after they purchased the land from Elizabeth E. Parrott, which encompassed the area between the Buffalo Bayou and White Oak Bayou. They renamed the city after President Sam Houston.

Houston has grown exponentially into a sprawling metropolis with a system of loops (most notably the 610 Loop) and districts or “superneighborhoods.” Among these are Uptown, the Energy Corridor, Westchase, Memorial City, Texas Medical Center, and the Museum District. Within the 610 Loop is the Business District in Downtown Houston.
