Campus safety is of the utmost importance at the University of Houston. There are seven offices within the Department of Campus Safety tasked with providing safety and security on campus:
- Office of Emergency Management
- UH Police
- Environmental Health and Safety
- Fire and Life Safety
- Parking and Transportation Services
- Automotive and Fleet Management Department
- Risk Management
The university has installed numerous Emergency Call Boxes adorned with blue lights for students, faculty, staff, and the public to contact police and security escorts if they are being threatened or feel unsafe.
Recently, UH launched Bikeep, state-of-the-art, high-security, smart bike racks that prevent the theft of bikes belonging to university students and employees. Users of Bikeep have to register their bikes with UH Parking and Transportation on the UH Go app in order to access these stations. Locking and unlocking of the bike racks are done through UH Go.
Each year, the university holds its Walk in the Dark community event. UH Police join forces with students, faculty, and staff members to walk areas of the campus at night to highlight areas where more lighting can be installed, which directly enhances and hardens campus safety.
